What are Defoamers?
Defoamers (or antifoams) are chemical additives specifically designed to control, prevent, or eliminate unwanted foam formation in industrial processes and products. Foam is a dispersion of gas bubbles in a liquid, stabilized by surfactants or other surface-active agents. While sometimes desirable (like in firefighting foam or shaving cream), foam is often problematic in industry, causing:
- Reduced equipment capacity and efficiency (foam takes up space)
- Overflow and spillage (safety hazards, product loss, environmental issues)
- Impaired heat and mass transfer Product defects and contamination
- Pump cavitation and hindered fluid flow
- Extended processing times
- Difficulties in filtration and separation
- Degraded product quality
How Defoamers Work:
Defoamers work by destabilizing foam lamellae (the thin liquid films separating bubbles). They typically have low surface tension and are insoluble in the foaming medium. Key mechanisms include:
Bridging: Defoamer droplets enter the foam lamella.
Spreading/De-wetting: The defoamer spreads on the lamella surface or displaces the stabilizing surfactants.
Lamella Rupture: The thinning or destabilized lamella ruptures, collapsing the bubble.

SUNY maintains an independent R&D center in Xi'an featuring well-equipped laboratory facilities and a professional technical research team. Since its establishment in 1997, the company has specialized in pulp & paper, water treatment, chemical production, and bio-fermentation sectors. Through deep collaboration with domestic and international clients, SUNY has successfully developed multiple defoamer products whose defoaming and foam suppression capabilities are fully capable of replacing imported counterparts.
